Steve Shimmin has sent the following message regarding the handicap race on Friday
"Can I ask you all to try to turn up a little earlier than you usually do please?
We are piloting electronic timing and all competitors will be required to fit timing chips to the left hand chain stays of their machines prior to commencement of hostilities.
Not all are gifted with DIY skills so we may have to assist, don’t worry help is at hand. We will try to get the race off at 7 PM.
The weather forecast is ok.
If you know anyone who intends to enter on the line please ask them to email me if they can, prior to the event. Also if they can pre complete a TLI entry form this will make signing on a whole lot simpler."

Steve Shimmin has advised of dates for the events postponed earlier in the season
The two events postponed from 19 May and 14 June the following dates:
Friday 22 July.
Thursday 11 August.
4th September 20011 sees the debut of the ‘Lighthouses Challenge’ sportive event supported by Microgaming. Following popular feedback from last year’s two Isle of Man sportives, the Appleby and Curragh Classic, the IOMCA’s performance group has decided to resurrect a classic ride from bygone years taking in the Island’s lighthouses (where possible!) and taking in most of the Island’s coastline.
The lighthouses challenge offers two course distances, 100 miles and 41 miles, and the opportunity to ride the longer event in a 3 or 4 rider team. The teams will be allowed to changeover at a point of their choice as long as it’s at one of the 6 checkpoints.
The course will take a clockwise route from Douglas with the short course finishing in Peel. The 100 mile course takes in over 1200 metres of climbing, which includes the climbs to Cregneash and the Sloc, before taking in the Northern plains and then the shorter climbs along the North East coast back into Douglas. The longer event will have 3 feed zones and the short version 1 feed zone. At each feed zone there will be a (limited) supply of energy food and drink.
The Lighthouses Challenge, along with the Appleby Sportive in early August, provides the perfect preparation in the run up to End 2 End Challenge which takes place on the 18th September.
All entrants individual and team will receive a T-Shirt

On Sunday 7th August, the Ellan Vannin CC will be promoting the Appleby Sportives. The event consists of 2 courses – timed over either 100km ride or 72Km, with both starting and finishing at the Ramsey Rugby Club in the Mooragh Park, Ramsey. Participants may start anytime between 0900 & 1030, although slower riders are advised to go off as close to 0900 as possible.
The courses are challenging, with over 1500m of ascent including the climbs of Druidale (& Slieau Whallian for the 100Km) and taking in many roads that are not typically used in local races. The organisers stress that a Sportive is not a race and that although participants will be timed over the various sections of the course, the rules of the road must be obeyed at all times.
The start and finish for both distances is at Ramsey Rugby Club in Mooragh Park and the routes go Ramsey – Bride – coast road to Jurby Cronk – Ballaugh – up Druidale – Brandywell – Little London – Staarvey for both courses.
At this point, the shorter course carries straight-on down to the Peel-KML coastroad and then returns to the Mooragh via Orrisdale loop road – Vollan road – Jurby Cronk – Ballamoar straight – Summerhill Road – Andreas – Regaby – Grove Museum – Grand Island.
The 100Km ride – from Cronk-y-Voddy turn left towards Tynwald Mills – Tynwald Hill – up Slieau Whallian – Shoulder Road – down Dalby – Glen Maye – Peel – coast road to Kirk Michael – Orrisdale loop road – Vollan road – Jurby Cronk – Ballamoar straight – Summerhill Road – Andreas – Regaby – Grove Museum – Grand Island – Mooragh Park – Finish – 100Km
It is expected that a small group of race-fit competitive cyclists would compete the 100Km course in around 3-4 hours, with recreational riders taking 4-5.
Manx Timing Solutions will be providing the event timing and each participant will carry an electronic ‘dibber’ which will be logged at the start, two checkpoints along the way and again at the finish. This will provide entrants with their times for each section and allow for comfort breaks & regroupings at each checkpoint.
As well as the regular racing cyclists on the Island, it is hoped that entrants for the forthcoming Lighthouses Challenge and the End-to-End (E2E) Mountain Bike Race will use the event as ideal preparation in terms of a tough endurance bike session, as well as recreational cyclists who fancy a challenge.
An entry fee of £20 applies for entry on the day. Entry includes 3rd party insurance, electronic timing, a race bottle, energy bar and a refreshment voucher for after the event. As this is not a race, there are no prizes, but any surplus cash generated by the event will be donated to Hospice, the designated local charity of Appleby.
For further details call Richard Fletcher on 498849.
The online entry is now available.
Christian Varley (TMT) was the winner of todays Fred Kelly sponsored by Black Grace Cowley. Andrew Roche (Appleby/EVCC) was second
The organiser would like to give a special mention to all the staff including The Special Constabulary and Red Cross who helped make today’s race a really good event.
