The on-line entry sysytem is now closed. Entries will still be accepted on the day – the fee is £15
On Sunday 1st August, the Ellan Vannin CC will be promoting the Appleby Sportive. The event consists of a timed 100km ride starting and finishing at the Ramsey Rugby Club in the Mooragh Park, Ramsey. Participants may start anytime between 0900 & 1000, although slower riders are advised to go off as close to 0900 as possible.
The course is a challenging one, with over 1500m of ascent including the climbs of Druidale & Slieau Whallian and taking in many roads that are not typically used in local races. The organizers stress that a Sportive is not a race and that although participants will be timed over the various sections of the course, the rules of the road must be obeyed at all times.
The start and finish is at Ramsey Rugby Club in Mooragh Park and the route goes Ramsey – Bride – coast road to Jurby Cronk – Ballaugh – up Druidale – Brandywell – Little London – Staarvey – Switchback – Tynwald Mills – Tynwald Hill – up Slieau Whallian – Shoulder Road – down Dalby – Glen Maye – Peel – coast road to Kirk Michael – Orrisdale loop road – Vollan road – Jurby Cronk – Ballamoar straight – Summerhill Road – Andreas – Regaby – Grove Museum – Grand Island – Mooragh Park – Finish – 100Km
It is expected that a small group of race-fit competitive cyclists would compete the course in around 3-4 hours, with recreational riders taking 4-5.
Manx Timing Solutions will be providing the event timing and each participant will carry an electronic ‘dibber’ which will be logged at the start, two checkpoints along the way and again at the finish. This will provide entrants with their times for each section and allow for comfort breaks & regroupings at each checkpoint.
As well as the regular racing cyclists on the Island, it is hoped that entrants for the forthcoming End-to-End (E2E) Mountain Bike Race will use the event as ideal preparation in terms of a tough endurance bike session, as well as recreational cyclists who fancy a challenge.
An entry fee of £15 applies for entry on the day. Entry includes 3rd party insurance, electronic timing and a refreshment voucher for after the event. As this is not a race, there are no prizes, but any surplus cash generated by the event will be donated to the Hyperbaric Chamber Fund.
